The impact of HIV/AIDS in Malawi is huge, and especially so in Mulanje. Out of the total population between 15 and 49, 8.8% is infected with HIV. The prevalence is higher among women (10.8%) than men (6.4%). The prevalence in the Southern region is twice as high as that in the Central and Northern regions, and Mulanje is especially hard-hit. Here, 25.9 % of women between 15 and 49 are HIV positive, as well as 14.2% of men in the same age group. (Source: Demographic and Health Survey, 2015-16).

Tuberculosis
Tuberculosis is a common problem in people living with HIV, and also in those without HIV-infection. The following strategies are followed to reduce the incidence of TB:
establishment of community sputum collection commitees throughout the region
close follow-up of TB-patients on treatment and their family
screening of all sick HIV patients who are admitted to the hospital for evidence of TB
preventive therapy for TB for patients newly started on HIV-treatment high quality X-ray at the hospital
annual screening of healthcare workers at MMH and maintaining a clinic at Mulanje Prison
