Introduction
Mulanje Mission College of Nursing and Midwifery (MMCNM) is a
training institution which was established in 1876 by Scottish
Missionaries under the Church of Central African Presbyterian (CCAP)
Synod of Blantyre. Previously the college operated within Mulanje
Mission Hospital (MMH). In 2009, the college become an independent
institution and over the years the college has grown from training lay
midwives to offering Diplomas in Nursing and Midwifery, Public Health
and Nutrition and Food Science.

Entry requirements
1. Nurse Midwife Technician
- The college admits both male and female students.-
- Candidates should be between 16 and 45 years.
- Students are admitted from any religious and social background.
- Students need to have a full Malawi School Certificate of Education with 4 credits including English, Biology, Physics/Chemistry/Physical Science plus any of the following subjects: (Mathematics, Agriculture, and Geography & Home Economics).
2. Community Midwifery Assistants
- Candidates should be between 16 and 45 years.
- Students are admitted from any religious and background.
- Candidates must provide evidence of having passed the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE) or its equivalent with pass in English and Physical Science
3. Diploma in Public Health and Diploma in Nutrition and Food Science
- Candidates must provide evidence of having passed the Malawi School Certificate of Education (MSCE).
- Candidates should be between 16 and 45 years.
Current Fees
- The tuition and boarding fees are MK1, 500,000.00 per year, and this is payable in two instalments. Half payment at the beginning of the first semester and a second payment at the beginning of the second semester.
- K950, 000.00 for non-residential students.
The fees may change from time to time.

Major successes
- Over 90% pass rate in national licensure examinations
- Maintained students discipline in line with Christian values
- Very positive feedback from employers on the quality of our graduates with some being awarded national accolades by the National organization of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) and the Association of Malawian Midwives (AMAMI)
- Maintained good working relationship with government and developmental partners
- Developed user friendly policies for both students and staff to ensure fair and transparent student and staff recruitment
- Initiated new programs in Public Health and Nutrition and Food Science
- Introduced non-residential modality for students
Challenges
- Lack of financial support towards student fees in view of discontinued government support and the end of the projects by various developmental partners.
- Shortage of staff and student accommodation.
- Staff and students transport.
- Capacity building for staff.
- Shortage of teaching and learning facilities.
- Teaching and learning models (Mannequins), including books and computers.
- Furniture (both staff and students) and electronic gadgets.
Future Plans
- Introduce Registered Nurse and Midwifery Diploma and Degree courses as part of Blantyre Synod University
- Introduce other health related courses such as Pharmacy, Medicine and Laboratory
