The Tikondane Support Group
When people discover that they are HIV infected they are facing more than poverty. They have not only dealt with changes to their physical condition but also at times stigmatization by colleagues, friends and family. Women will often get divorced and left with children to support. Due to sickness they are often unable to work on their fields for food or their full time work for money. However their needs are not only material but also social since still many people do not know how to go about HIV/AIDS. Women are more vulnerable than men since their social status is already lower than that of Malawian men.
The Tikondane support group, set up in April 2003, is comprised of HIV positive members, whom share the same goal of alleviating some of the pressure felt by the victims of HIV/AIDS in Malawi, essentially creating a stonger network of support for individuals inflicted with the disease. This daunting task requires realistic plans and aims, expressed in the following sections;
